They're baaack

Plants do strange things...sometimes they just surprise you. This for example.........
Last fall I planted chrysanthemums in this container...and they died. Then in January I planted pansies in it. I thought I had removed the dead mums...apparently not. They have risen from the dead! Yesterday I notice they're back. Weird.
$3 Dinner Plate Dahlia from Big Lots is about to bloom! Whoo hoo!!! I can't wait to see this baby in action. The blooms are supposed to get up to 10" in diameter. Miniature Dahlias planted last summer are doing great. Here is another Dahlia.
Pineapple Ginger
I am completely fascinated by buds...especially hydrangea buds. The bloom stages are really interesting. I have photographed them over the past few weeks. When I get a full blown bud I will show you the progression of each hydrangea. The one above is a lace cap.
This hydrangea is a old fashion blue mophead. It should be changing colors any day now.
and finally....a little bloom. This is one of the zinnias I planted Saturday. It is about 3" tall, and has a teensy little bloom on it :). I noticed that most of the zinnias planted Saturday all have buds on them. They are so tiny, I am suprised they are blooming!

Hey! My mums always die in the winter and come back in the spring. I usually cut them back all the way to the ground when they turn brown, and plant some winter annuals (like pansies) around and between them. By the time the pansies are declining and ready to be composted in the late spring, the mums have tons of new growth!
Your pink dahlias are DARLING!!!

I love dahlias. I can't wait to see how the dinner plate turn out. Isn't it great when a plant comes back that you thought was gone?!
I can't believe you have hydrangea buds and flowers already!!

I'm fascinated with buds too.. especially when they're at the stage when they're bursting with bloom inside the day before they pop open.

Always so exciting when nature throw you a curve. That mum refused to go away. It is a strong one meant to keep a survivor. I love the miniature dahlias. I hat staking the taller ones. May have to try the miniature ones.

You had a 'happy accident' don't ya just love it? I was just gonna say when I saw your Hydrangea it looks like a lacecap. I just love mine. They are so different from the others. The clay keeps it a brilliant blue and I was trying to change it back until I realized how much everyone loved the color. So I went and bought a pink hydrangea and put it in a pot to keep it pink! I can't wait to see your dinnerplate - they are huge. Mine never made it last year so now I have to go buy another one!!!

my dinner plate dahlia a couple of years ago was 18 inches in diameter and the plant itself grew to over 7 feet tall! I have never seen such beautiful big blooms...I better go get some more of this...lol....your photos look wonderful this time (as usual)

That mum really wants to hang out with you. You can really tell the difference climate makes. My dahlias aren't near ready to bloom any time soon. It's been a cold, dreary spring.

I'm beggin' for sun!

I can't wait to see the 10" dahlias. Isn't it funny about mums. I have had some do the same thing. You only think they're dead. Becca

PS - I don't pinch back my mums. They will be bushier that way, but I think they're fine the way they are. They bloom 3 times each summer/fall - I just cut them back/dead-head in-between.

Ginger - thanks

Catherine - I am really excited about the dinner plate. Several of my friends already have full blown blooms on their hydrangeas

Darla - I do dead head them...they will come back later on. I was just suprised that it is MAY and they are blooming

Prarie - glad I am not the only one...I knew you would understand

Hocking Hills - the miniatures do GREAT for me! They bloom non-stop and love the heat, and take very little water. I know the dinner plate is supposed to get really large, and tall...so I am ready for it

RG - I DO love a lace cap....I love all of them. I was weary of a buying the bulbs at big Lots...dunno why. But 2 for $3 you can't beat that.

Tootsie - WOW!! That is good to know. I would love to see photos of it if you have any

Pyzahn - Apparently it liked its home!!! I hope you get some sun and warm weather soon.

Becca - That happens to me more and more frequently.

Linzi- his version is so peaceful to me...calms my nerves. He is great. Reminds me of Hawaii...and I love ANYTHING that reminds me of Hawaii.

Ginger - I dead head mine. I dead head everything...if the head is dead it is gone!!! I have found this pretty much helps EVERYTHING. The plant is not using up energy on a dead bloom if you snip it off, the energy goes back into the plant and helps it to bloom again.

Melanie - I love them. They are one of my fave's. I want to keep adding to my collection.

Love that about the "dead" plant. We had potatoes come back one year--thought we'd pulled them all up--and weren't they yummier than the year before!

I love plants, they surprise me all the time...I don't know how they survived all the rain we've had but they have! Love the dahlias...a great color. How big is a dinner plate dahlia expected to be? g

All your blooms are looking good. Cute story about the chrysanthemums. You just never know about plants.

I have a couple of orange profusion zinnias that came from. I'm excited about that!

I love the hydrangea buds!

And the little zinnia! I don't think I've seen one before - so you can tell it that it's the first zinnia I've ever seen!

I love the miniature dahlias, and mine are just starting to come back. It is amazing sometimes how plants that seem dead and gone, suddenly show up come spring.

Dirt Princess,
I LOVE the puny zinnia! :-)Keep those mums in the pots. Jamie and I made the mistake of planting some in the ground (Frosty Jeanette)and it is spreading like crazy we keep having to pull up chunks to contain it. The others we planted aren't spreading like that...thank goodness.
