What is going on here?

I am not sure what is going on with my African Daisy. I have 2 of them, and they both have been doing great until this week. The one that is of question is in the front bed, it receives full sun. It looks like it hasn't been watered....ever! It gets watered nearly every day or every other day. The other plants in this same bed are not wilted, and doing great. This is the bush upclose...it looks dry and burnt Here is is with its friends
and yes....it is leaning to the left, I don't know why. It has done that since I planted it. I was thinking that after I planted it, it wouldn't straighten up and act right!
I have another African Daisy in the front yard as well, it also receives full sun. The soil here is very sandy, versus where the other is plant is really rich. Maybe that is the problem?
They were bought and planted at the same time....same day. So I am at a loss as to why the one isn't doing so poorly. Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?
I have several frogs around the garden...I just happened to catch this one as he was hopping away. Unlike the dragonflies...the frogs are not very camera friendly. They don't like to have their picture taken.
Now this is just plain weird to me.......
These odd things are coming up on my calladiums. I know they are part of the calladium...but what are they? Are they the "bloom" of a calladium or what?
Each plant had 5 + of them
and they are just plain weird
I have been wanting to get some shots of the Mexican Petunia, but the blooms fall off everyday around 2pm. By the time I get home everyday they have fallen off, so I had to get some morning shots. However it was too early and most of the blooms had not yet opened.
Verbena and Coleus...I just love the color of this verbena
We apparently got some rain last night. The yard was pretty mushy, and all the plants were covered in rain droplets. Good for me....I can save some water and not run the sprinklers today. The blueberries are coming along. I pick a few each day. I have to beat the birds to them! The bush is loaded, and I can't wait to get enough berries to bake with.

I'm not sure what's going on with your first couple of plants. I hope you can save them. I really like the coleus and verbena (?) combination and you toad looks happy. Looks like you have more blueberries to pick.

Catherine I meant to hit "save" after I uploaded all the photos, before I added text, and instead I hit "publish"...ugh! So then I had to go edit it. But all is well now. It is just strange to me about my African Daisy Bush. Someone will be able to help surely

I don't know about an African Daisy Bush but we have the annual flowers here and I love them. But mine would look not so good - just muddled along barely blooming. When we went on vacation I came back and they were wonderful and blooming their little hearts out. I found out I watered them too much. Maybe the bush is the same and needs to go longer without water. Beats me - I'm the trial and error girl remember. I lose more than I save! LOL

DP,
I think sometimes you just lose a plant and that's all there is to it. Sounds like the perfect excuse to buy something else to me. :-)

Hmm, that's rather mysterious, isn't it? There isn't any kind of creepy crawly thing chewing at the stem or anything is there? I hate garden mysteries. When something is not doing well I want to know why (before I go out and buy another one)!

UPDATE: The Dirt Queen (my mom) says it is getting to much water and to cut it all the way back

African Daisy..I have some thoughts, need to check before I open my (keyboard) mouth. That is the Caladium Bloom, weird, I too have them on almost all of my Caladiums this year. Mexican Petunia, Ruellia, will bloom all day in the sun without much water here. Frogs are everywhere!!!

Is the mystery plant jack in a pulpit?

Dirt Princess said...

K&V no it is the calladium, it is actually the calladiums bloom.

I love the coleus and pink verbena. They look good together. The photo of the blueberries looks so pretty displaying several shades of color. It's a mystery why one does good and the other doesn't. My Johnsons Blue Geranium is growing like crazy in one spot but isn't growing well in another and they are located withing 15 feet of each other.

I've never seen my calidiums bloom either. Good show of that toad. He's much bigger than the little guys who live in my garden. He's big enough to spook you!

Looks like your daisy problem is solved by mom, of course. Everyone knows that Mother Knows Best when it comes to gardening. At least that's true for every other generation in my family. Your verbena and coleus are beautiful together. Do you get wild verbena popping up in the lawn in your area? I'm going to try transplanting some of the wild stuff to a flower bed and see how it does there. Those caladium blooms are weird. I've never seen anything like them before.

It is always sad to loose a plant but it does givenother opportunity

I agree with Mom. Too much water. Also, with all the rain we've been getting it causes the cut worms to come up out of the ground...maybe something like that happening. The Caladiums are blooming!

Could the problem with the daisy be some sort of wilt due to fungus? Sometimes the fungal wilt looks that way to me. Cutting it back may help either way. Good Luck! -Jackie

Your berries look delicious!! It won't be long and the kids and I will be picking up the street at our local berry farm. We picked 25 lbs last year. I'm aiming for 30 this year. I can't wait till our berries produce like yours!!

Thanks for the award too!!

Have a great weekend!

I am blaming the issues that are very similar to yours...on ants! they eat the tender roots of some plants....this year I have lost several annuals to them too!

Well I have no answers when it comes to your problems. When another commenter said not to worry about what you lose, I sorta agree. Just pull them up and replace them... That's what I'd do. You have so many gorgeous flowers/plants.

Hope you had a good day.
Hugs,
Betsy
