Blooming With the Brown's

The azaleas have been putting on a show for the past few weeks. We had a pretty hard rain here on Wednesday, and I wanted to get over to The Brown's and see their azaleas before the rain and wind stripped the blooms off. I had never been to their place when the azaleas were at their peak. I always seemed to miss it. I was either too early or a little to late, but I think I picked the right day this time.

When I arrived Mrs. Brown was out pulling weeds, and Mr. Brown was walking around the garden with a 2 gallon weed sprayer on his back. That may not be a big deal, I mean,  we all garden, we all pull weeds right? We aren't all 88 years old. Eighty-eight years old.......they cease to amaze me. They can work circles around most people half their age. They tend to this 2 acre garden everyday, pretty much all day long. They are always outside. Usually when I call them I don't get an answer, but I know where to find them.

They have lived in this house for over 50 years of their 65 year marriage.

And their garden....like their marriage....amazes me.

I took alot of photos, and posted a good bit here. I am just going to let the pictures talk.....

Mr. Brown has an amazing rose garden. I would say several hundred roses. They can tell you a story about each one. What old country road they found it on. Where their grandma's got it from. This particular rose in the picture above, was found at an old cemetary. They don't know the name of this rose. The blooms are about the size of a quarter. Anyone know the name???

They know the names of each of their roses....and as much as they have told me the names....I should know them too, but I don't. Out of all the roses they have, there are only two that are unknown.

This white rose above, is one of the unknowns. When Mrs. Brown was 8 or 9 years old, she stayed over night with her friend. Her friends mother had this rose, and she had gotten it from her grandmother. Mrs. Brown asked for a cutting to take home to her mother. They rooted the rose, and it grew. They have looked into several antique rose societies and various other places to find the name. Yet, the rose remains nameless...

I hope you enjoyed your stroll around the Brown's. Saturday, the garden club is making a trip to Petals From the Past. I am going to take Mr. & Mrs. Brown. They have never been there, and I am really excited about taking them.

Hope all of you had a wonderful weekend!

I miss camellias and azaleas! We do have some rhododendrons in WI that look enough like azaleas. Love the Brown's garden; to me, the epitome of a Southern garden.

Becca you will have to come see it oneday!

Neora...you are exactly right. It is a good 'ol Southern garden. Your typical southern plants & trees are all in this garden.

HHG thanks! They rose is pretty neat. Each bloom has a dot of red. Just one little dot. Pretty neat.

Bernie it is a labor of love, and a lot of team work. I feel like them staying active is one of the reason that have lived such healthy lives.

Wow! If the Brown's are half as delightful as their garden, you are truly blessed! have them take a bloom or picture of that rose to Petals From The Past. Jason Powell, might know the name of it. He studied at Texas A & M and is quite a rose wrangler.... Great post. Awesome roses!
